A REVIEW OF AN AFRICA MAGIC TELEVISION SERIES –FORBIDDEN ***

Forbidden is a romantic adventure that revolves around an office romance between Demilade Doregos and Enitan Olanipekun despite being against company policy. The lovers do their best to keep their relationship under wraps until Becky, Demilade’s ex-girlfriend outs the truth.  The story doesn’t end with Demilade and Enitan’s relationship; it covers the amazing character of Ebohon Doregos and the intricacies that surround her family and ‘business’.

The African Magic original, a viewers’ favourite is produced by Opeyemi Odugbemi. Victor Sanchez Aghahowa is the Series Director while Tope Oshin and Pat Oghre Imobhio are Directors. The compelling story of this riveting drama is a product of the talented head writer, Chris Ihindero and other writers such as Lekan Olarenwaju and Osang Abang.

New episodes of the drama air on every weekday at 8 O’clock pm CAT on DSTV, African Magic Showcase Channel 151. Besides having a seasoned crew, the romantic drama stars some of the leading actors and actresses in the Nigerian movie industry such as Nobert Young, Tina Mba, Sola Fosudo, Moyinoluwa Olutayo, Kunle Remi and Theresa Edem-Isemin. There is also a beautiful blend of old faces in the industry as aforementioned and somewhat new talents such as Pearl Okorie, Mofeyitoluwa Jebutu and Nengi Adoki. A quick glance at the cast and crew of the television drama assures one of a good treat. One can safely say that a lot of care and mindfulness was put into the selection and profiling.

The costumier and props manager must be given some credit for the choice of décor, props and wears used at the locations and for the actors. The cloths were modern and fashionable which fits into the overall contemporary aura of the drama.  However, the quality of some props and even cloths is not commensurate to the socio-economic status of some characters.

For instance, considering the impression of the level of wealth and affluence of the Doregos, one would expect that every member of the member to ride in very expensive cars or own own high-end devices. It’s strange to find that even the Doregos matriarch, Eboh, doesn’t use an Apple laptop. Moreover, the duration of time for which the female items use their wigs or hair extensions is rather too long; putting into consideration the fact that these characters are highly placed professionals or children of very rich parents.

Despite the minor slacks mentioned above, Forbidden is a viewers’ favourite and the reason isn’t farfetched. The story line is very captivating, especially with all the intricacies and beautiful complexities that surround Dame Eboh Doregos. She is a murderess, money launderer, she is scheming and manipulative but for some strange and twisted reason, viewers still root for her. The characterisation of Eboh is widely successful and it’s all thanks to the creative writers of the telenovela. They succeed in making the viewers see Eboh from a sympathetic rather than a judgmental standpoint.

The character of Eboh is, perhaps, the only character that has been fully developed and one can tell that the main plot of this television drama revolves around her. It makes one worry about the sustainability of the series. It is justifiable to fear that there wouldn’t be anything left to keep the viewers interested. In other words, the writers should invest in developing the subplots to become really interesting sides of some sort..

Out of five points, it is safe to give Forbidden three point five. For the compelling story, talented actors and seasoned crew, the ‘bloody’ romantic telenovela deserves some accolades.
